Welcome back, all ye peeps, to the third installment of the 2017 Movie Countdown (or, if you prefer the longer title, The Ranting SBox’s Annual Movie Countdown [2017 Edition]). For those of you just joining us, this is Part 3 of a 4 part miniseries where I gather all the 36 movies I saw in the year 2017 and rank them from worst to best, discussing each as I go. This has been a tradition of mine for the past 4 years, and may I’m having a blast making these posts so far. These are always some of the my favorite posts of every year, so I hope you’re enjoying these as much as I am making them.
Anyway, to see the full list of movies I’ll be covering throughout the countdown, click here for the series’ intro post. There you’ll also find links to the previous installments of the countdown, but you can also find those links for Part 1 and Part 2 right here.
Last time we went up a notch from some of the year’s weakest offerings to the more middle of the road films. Now we take things up another notch higher with the “Great” category. Continue reading 2017 Movie Countdown: The Great (#20-#11)

Welcome back to SBox Recommends, where our motto is “every film has its fans”. Here I see a movie, review it, and then find out who will like it most and who will like it least.
The story of the DC Extended Universe is a tragic one to say the least. Created as a response and competitor to the rising Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DCEU got its start back in 2013 with the split receptive Man of Steel. Since then, the franchise struggled to find a solid audience with one mixed to poorly received film after the other. But then came 2017 — a year of potential optimism for the DCEU — which brought about their first hit, Wonder Woman. The film became one of the most beloved of the year, and represented a golden opportunity for the DCEU to finally, FINALLY get on stable footing with critics, audiences, and the box office. But that opportunity only rests on one other variable: the success of Justice League.
Now, I won’t blow smoke up your collective asses and pretend things are looking good for the movie so far, because holy crap! However, despite all the skepticism, the steep odds for success, and the so-so word of mouth, is it still worth seeing? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Justice League (Movie Review)

If there was any series in Hollywood that deserves a break, it’s the DCEU. The closest equivalent to Disney’s MCU, the young series has yet to prove itself as a viable competitor to the Marvel brand. Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad were unable to find unanimous praise with critics and audiences, and only one of them can really be defined as not a financial disappointment. This made 2017 an incredibly important year for the DCEU, as it may be its last chance to dazzle audience with its two offerings. Each is as important as the other, but only one of them has the misfortune of being first. And so comes the million dollar question: Can Wonder Woman save the DCEU? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Wonder Woman (Movie Review)
If you were to ask me how 2016 stacked up to previous years in terms of films, I’d probably define it as “underwhelming”. It was an odd year for big budget movies, where most of the year’s most anticipated films ended up disappointing audiences, as was the case with Batman v Superman, Ghostbusters, Independence Day 2 and Jason Bourne among others. Meanwhile, the best films of the year existed below the surface, often raking in middling returns and going unnoticed — such is the fate of The Nice Guys and Kubo and the Two Strings. I enjoyed a lot of films in 2016 (as you’ll see in the 2016 Movie Countdown), but for what it’s worth, I’m hoping 2017 is a lot better.
As is tradition here on The Ranting SBox, I start every year with a list of my most anticipated films of the new year. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: My Most Anticipated Movies of 2017
San Diego Comic Con 2016, the ultimate all-around geek convention, has now come to an end. And what a glorious time it was. While I was unable to attend the actual convention, I was still able to enjoy the show from the comfort of my own evil lair, watching trailer after trailer as they came out along the way. There’s always so much at every SDCC to enjoy whether you consider yourself a geek or not. So much so that I’d like to talk about a couple of the trailers that stuck out to me the most.
