There was an idea… to gather a series of known and unknown comic book characters… to see if they can become something more… so they can make the big bucks… that James Cameron never could.
Welcome one and all to the very first edition of SBox Spoils. This is something I’ve been planning to do for a while, but the concept is very straightforward. In addition to creating the regular, spoiler-free reviews I always have (under the title SBox Recommends), I will also be offering a spoiler-filled review which will be meant for those who have already seen the movie or simply don’t care that much about spoilers. The idea is to give a more unfettered, in-depth perspective on a movie than I could give otherwise.
I’ll talk more about what this segment will entail in terms of the future in a separate post down the road, but for right now consider this first installment as a kind of test-run. A proof of concept if you will.
With introductions out of the way, I believe it’s time to finally talk about the film of the hour. For our first spoiler-filled review, we’re gonna talk about the most anticipated film of the decade bar-none, Avengers: Infinity War. Welcome back to SBox Recommends, where our motto is “every film has its fans”. Here I see a movie, review it, and then find out who will like it most and who will like it least.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (aka Hollywood’s elaborate game of cinematic connect-the-dots) is a series made up of multiple different movies, it’s important to remember that it was all built on the back of three trilogies starting around the same time: the Iron Man trilogy, the Captain America trilogy, and the Thor trilogy. These trilogies not only launched the MCU, but also remained a constant of the series throughout the years. These are what brought everything together and developed the core of what the MCU is all about narratively and tonally. And now it’s time for the last of these trilogies to come to an end.
Everybody knows the Avengers is incomplete without everyone’s favorite, ginormous, Shakespearean, hammerhead blondie in a cape to bring it all together. Even if you believe his movies are the weakest of the MCU, you gotta love Thor. In a story of traditional heroes with grounded backstories, Thor and his films provide a necessary sense of variety to the series which I appreciate. So, between my love for the Thor movies, my anticipation for Avengers 3, and the addition of the Hulk of all people to the story, how could I possibly miss the final installment in this often underappracieted trilogy? Let’s see if Ragnarok is worth getting excited for! Continue reading SBox Recommends: Thor — Ragnarok (Movie Review)
If you were to ask me how 2016 stacked up to previous years in terms of films, I’d probably define it as “underwhelming”. It was an odd year for big budget movies, where most of the year’s most anticipated films ended up disappointing audiences, as was the case with Batman v Superman, Ghostbusters, Independence Day 2 and Jason Bourne among others. Meanwhile, the best films of the year existed below the surface, often raking in middling returns and going unnoticed — such is the fate of The Nice Guys and Kubo and the Two Strings. I enjoyed a lot of films in 2016 (as you’ll see in the 2016 Movie Countdown), but for what it’s worth, I’m hoping 2017 is a lot better.
As is tradition here on The Ranting SBox, I start every year with a list of my most anticipated films of the new year. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: My Most Anticipated Movies of 2017
Every year, including this one, my most anticipated film is always a Marvel film. Lord knows my family and I were super pumped for Avengers 2 considering Marvel’s cinematic winning streak since 2008. We couldn’t wait for this film. We even assigned each other Marvel character T-shirts for the occasion of watching the movie opening weekend. (I wore the Ultron short). And thank God this movie turned out to be just as awesome as we wanted it. Continue reading My 2015 Movies: Avengers – Age of Ultron (#6)
This was my most anticipated film of 2015. In a year that is chock filled with highly anticipated films- from Star Wars to Jurassic World to Fast and Furious– this was the movie I had my eye on. That’s because I’m a huge fan of Marvel’s line of movies and the first Avengers film. But with great hype comes a great amount of skepticism. The first Avengers film is a hard act to follow, let alone attempt to overtake. People still say that it’s the greatest comic book film ever. And that’s the chief question this time around: Is it better than the first one? As debatable as it is to say, I would say “yes”. Continue reading SBox Recommends: Avengers 2: Age of Ultron
