2016 Movie Countdown: Bottom of the Barrel (#44-40)

Welcome, one and all, to the new and revised 2016 Movie Countdown. For those who didn’t see my recent update post click here for the full details of this change. Basically, the original format I started this series on was hard to maintain in a timely fashion. That’s why I decided to change things up, so I can complete the countdown just a bit easier. Hopefully, this new format will also be more easily digestible to you guys, too, so you won’t have to keep up with 44 separate posts.

As you can see, I’ve restarted the countdown back to #44 to demonstrate how future installments will go. For those joining us for the first time, this series is an annual tradition where I rank every film I saw in the previous year from least favorite to favorite. It’s not a best and worst list per se. It’s just my personal favorite films of 2016. This year I will be discussing 44 movies (see the full list here) across 5 posts separated by categories: The Bottom of the Barrel, The Mediocre, The Good, The Great, and finally the Top 10. Continue reading 2016 Movie Countdown: Bottom of the Barrel (#44-40)

I’d like to welcome one and all to the year 2017 and to The Ranting SBox’s 2016 Movie Countdown. This is my third annual countdown event where I take every film I saw in the previous year and rank them from worst to best. Instead of making one simple post with a Top 10 or 5 of the year, I that with all the films I see in a given year I’d just cover all of them in mini-review format. SBox Recommends: Office Christmas Party (Movie Review)

Note: SBR never spoils. You are safe. Enjoy!

Ah Christmas! The most wonderful time of the year just couldn’t come soon enough this year. With a year full of tragedy, hate, scandal, death and Lord knows what else I repressed throughout the year, it’s good to be close to the end of the year and to celebrate the most kindhearted holiday around. I needed this season. The nostalgic Christmas specials. The shining lights and heartwarming decorations. The relaxation that comes after a semester of stress and work. The pleasant sounds of Christmas songs ringing in my head day-in andday-out. The cool wintery air. (Wait I live in Florida). The slightly cooler late summer air. Most of all, I needed a good laugh.

That’s why, even in a month that has Rogue One and La La Land among others playing, I chose to watch Office Christmas Party. I wanted to laugh and get in the Christmas spirit at the same time. Does the film succeed in either of those areas, or did I make the wrong move? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Office Christmas Party (Movie Review)

SBox Recommends: Independence Day – Resurgence (Movie Review)

Note: SBR never spoils. You are safe. Enjoy!

On this day 240 years ago, the 13 British colonies in the recently discovered Western World declared in one voice that we will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. We’re gonna live on. We’re going to survive. Today we celebrate our Independence Day…2!

It has been 20 years since the first Independence Day hit theaters in the summer of 1996. The film set in the mid 90’s with an all-star cast wowed audiences with its depiction of a world defending itself from an alien invasion. While debates concerning the film’s quality still persist to this day, the film is still beloved by many for its impressive effects, memorable scenes, lovable characters and overall fun vibe. It remains a staple of the dumb 90’s action movie genre and an undeniable classic, one that apparently had grounds for a sequel.

The concept of an Independence Day 2 interested me upon first hearing it. I didn’t really feel it called for a sequel, but I knew that this could be amazing if done right. Take all the fun, loud and dumb of the original and translate it in the modern day, and you’ve got yourself a modern classic. I’m hesitantly in! Hesitant, because this could also be a real bomb if handled incorrectly.

Though most people have made up their minds about the movie, declaring in one voice that this movie should go quietly into the night, is it really as bad as people are saying? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Independence Day – Resurgence (Movie Review)

SBox Recommends: Neighbors 2 – Sorority Rising (Movie Review)

Note: SBR never spoils. You are safe. Enjoy!

The first Neighbors movie (or Bad Neighbors for my foreign friends) was outstandingly hilarious, and one of my favorite comedies of 2014. It was a comedy that had a lot of heart, charm, energy and comedic timing; everything a growing boy like me needs in his comedies. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who felt that way, either, because last year brought the announcement of (Bad) Neighbors 2. Continue reading SBox Recommends: Neighbors 2 – Sorority Rising (Movie Review)

SBox Recommends: Captain America – Civil War (Movie Review)

It’s strange how far we have come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Can you believe we have reached the point where we’re talking about the final Captain America movie? So strange. Though I have to admit, this particular Captain America movie goes a bit beyond being just a Captain America movie. This is the rising action of the Marvel story arc; the point where we’re no longer setting up the world and are now introducing the conflict. And what better way to introduce that conflict than with war? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Captain America – Civil War (Movie Review)

My 2015 Movies: Straight Outta Compton (#1)

Last, but most certainly not least, it’s finally time to discuss my favorite film of 2015. This was a movie which had no business being as good as it was…I mean, it was supposed to be good, but not this good. Compton came to play during the summer. Much like when NWA came to light in 1988, this film caught everyone by surprise. Continue reading My 2015 Movies: Straight Outta Compton (#1)

My 2015 Movies: Bridge of Spies (#2)

One of the final movies I saw on this list, I simply knew I had to see this movie. It had my name written all over it, and while the rest of my family weren’t into the trailers, I found the concept fascinating. Impressive line-up of talent right off the bat with one of my favorite directors, Stephen Spielberg, behind it. So, I went out of my way to see this movie, both for the Countdown and for myself. And it was wonderful; brilliant even! Continue reading My 2015 Movies: Bridge of Spies (#2)

My 2015 Movies: Creed (#3)

Picking my Top 3 movies was probably the most difficult part for me. The following three movies are just so good and resonate so much with me that I could change the order right now and be satisfied with my selection. However, this movie and #2 were particularly difficult to place. For me it was a battle between the personal and the incredible, which believe it or not wasn’t an easy choice. So by a close and indecisive margin, let’s first tackle the personal with Creed. Continue reading My 2015 Movies: Creed (#3)

My 2015 Movies: The Wedding Ringer (#14)

January gets a bad rep, rightfully so, of housing some of the crappiest films of the year. So, while others look to January with contempt, I welcome it gladly. That’s because in mid-January of every year for the past couple of years a new Kevin Hart film releases. I’m actually a huge Kevin Hart fan, so I along with my family made it a point to make Wedding Ringer our first film of the year. And what a way to start 2015!
