SBox Recommends: Spider-Man — Homecoming (Movie Review)

Note: SBR never spoils. You are safe. Enjoy!

Welcome back to SBox Recommends, where our motto is “Every film has its fans”. Here I review a movie and then determine who will like it best and who will like it the least.

This was far and away my most anticipated film of 2017. I’ve loved Spider-Man with a passion ever since Tobey Maguire first played him when I was 4 years old. I’ve seen every movie and loved them all (yes, even the bad ones), and few people were as excited as me when Spidey was finally announced to join the MCU. This excitement was further solidified by the fact that the character stole the show in Civil War last year, and making us all wish this movie would just come already. And come it finally did. Was it worth the wait? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Spider-Man — Homecoming (Movie Review)

SBox Soapbox: How Deadpool Can Fit Into the MCU

Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe hosts a great many characters in their movies, from Iron Man to Ant-Man to Spider-Man, not all Marvel characters are created equal. In fact, Marvel Studios has access to all but 3 of their biggest franchises’ film rights: Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool. Still, many fans of the Marvel characters and their films hope for a day when… you know what? Fuck it. This is part 3 of this series and I’ve started them nearly the same way every time. You get the point by now.

For those of you who are joining us for the first time, welcome! I’ve been going through all 3 of the Marvel properties owned by 20th Century FOX and discussing some of the ways Marvel Studios and Disney could go about hypothetically bringing these characters into the MCU. SBox Soapbox: How the X-Men Can Fit Into the MCU

While the MCU is massive in terms of characters — Thor, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Black Panther, etc. — most fans know that the series is missing a few key characters. These characters — the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool — have been notably absent from the ever-growing Marvel film playground despite having a great amount of importance in the comics. This unfortunate reality has led many to hope for a day when these FOX-owned properties will be reunited with their friends over at Disney. But where could these characters fit if and when they do come back into the fray?

In this 3 part miniseries, I plan on tackling this question with each of the FOX-owned Marvel franchises, discussing some of the ways Marvel Studios could merge these characters into the MCU. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: How the X-Men Can Fit Into the MCU

SBox Soapbox: How the Fantastic Four Can Fit in the MCU

Despite the Marvel Cinematic Universe hosting a massive line of characters — such as the Avengers, Defenders, Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — there’s still a sense that the MCU is somewhat incomplete. It’s hard not to think that way when you compare the Marvel comics to what’s actually playing in theaters and notice the absence of 3 big franchises from the Avengers-canon: Fantastic Four, Deadpool, and X-Men. These 3 franchises make up the FOX/Marvel stable, the only characters Marvel and Disney lack access to in terms of film and television, much to the dismay of most fans who want to see the characters finally reunited on the big screen. SBox Quickie: A Deadpool Animated TV Show Is Coming!

deadpoolcartoon-995473-1280x0

Last year saw the release of Deadpool, one of the most unique superhero films in recent memory and an instantaneous hit for the house of X-Men. Through its unique blend of raunchy comedy, exciting violence, fourth-wall breaks, and chimichangas, Deadpool has won over the hearts of untold millions worldwide. It propelled Deadpool from a moderately known comic book character to a pop culture icon.

Nowadays, it’s commonplace to see Deadpool on shirts, games, hats, memes, and other memorabilia, along with a modest and somewhat watered-down presence on TV. Lately, Deadpool’s TV presence has been limited to Disney XD shows like Ultimate Spider-Man, which is nice other than it being a cameo on a G-rated show. If only there were a way to make Deadpool’s TV presence a little more… how would Deadpool put this?… Sexier. Yeah, let’s go with that!

Enter Donald Glover Continue reading SBox Quickie: A Deadpool Animated TV Show Is Coming!

SBox Recommends: Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (Movie Review)

First thing’s first. Since we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy, I’d like to quickly divert your attention to this post I made all the way back in 2014… I never did make that review, which was a huge regret of mine for years now. So, in a weird way I’m really glad I get to at least fulfill that old promise by reviewing its brother 3 years later.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that I was extremely excited for this movie. Not only is this the sequel to one of my favorite movies of the past decade, but this film also marks one measly year until our favorite Bunch of Jackasses finally meet Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers 3. But I’m getting ahead of myself. I’ve been so invested in the trailers and news surrounding the film; my mind racing with what this film would be about and how it’ll try to match the surprise hit that was the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Did it succeed in doing that, or did it just fall short of greatness? Only one way to find out. Continue reading SBox Recommends: Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (Movie Review)

SBox Soapbox: Spider-Man Won’t Leave the MCU… I Hope (My Theory)

spider-man-ant-man

So this is where we’re at, huh? I mean, we had a good thing going this week with the new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer looking amazing and showing us a lot more of what we want to see; perhaps a bit too much of it in my opinion. Still, I can’t deny how excited I continue to be for this movie to come out. It still remains my most anticipated movie of the year, so much so that I’m begging for Guardians of the Galaxy and Wonder Woman to just come and go already so that we can be in July. And then comes the troubling news. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: Spider-Man Won’t Leave the MCU… I Hope (My Theory)

SBox Soapbox: Why I’m Conflicted About X-Men’s Future

xmen0003

A couple weeks ago, I got to see Logan on opening weekend. It was a movie I’ve been looking forward to since the first trailers came out, due to how promising the premise was and how stylistically different it seemed to be from other comic book movies up to this point. The idea was brilliant, and I’m so happy to report that the actual film didn’t disappoint in the slightest. Not only is it one of the most unique films in the X-Men series as well as the whole comic book subgenre; it may actually be among the best. I highly recommend the movie to just about everyone, especially to fans of the X-Men film series that’s been with us for nearly 17 years so far.

X-Men is an immensely impressive series all things considered. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and to an extent the DC Extended Universe) have been dominating the comic movie genre in recent years, X-Men has outlived just about every other such franchise thus far. Just think about how many adaptations its outlived: The Dark Knight, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man, Hellboy, Blade, Fantastic Four, and the list keeps going. My Quick Thoughts on Spider-Man Homecoming Trailer #1 (& Brief Guardians Thoughts)

It broke my heart back in July when I heard that the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer was being shown for attendees of San Diego Comic Con, and I wasn’t able to see it. (Damn you SDCC exclusives)! Keep in mind that I’m a huge fan of both Spider-Man and the MCU, so I couldn’t wait to see how Sony and Marvel planned on taking the web-slinger now that he’s been officially inducted into the MCU. I along with everyone who saw Captain America: Civil War fell in love with how he was portrayed in that film, but can this new Spidey stand on his own as a contributing member of the universe? Continue reading My Quick Thoughts on Spider-Man Homecoming Trailer #1 (& Brief Guardians Thoughts)

SBox Recommends: Captain America – Civil War (Movie Review)

It’s strange how far we have come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Can you believe we have reached the point where we’re talking about the final Captain America movie? So strange. Though I have to admit, this particular Captain America movie goes a bit beyond being just a Captain America movie. This is the rising action of the Marvel story arc; the point where we’re no longer setting up the world and are now introducing the conflict. And what better way to introduce that conflict than with war? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Captain America – Civil War (Movie Review)
