Well folks, allow me to be the one millionth person to tell you “Happy New Year” as we ring in the new and exciting year of 2019. That’s right! The final year of the decade is now upon us, and as the decade comes to an eventual close, we draw our attention to the year we now find ourselves in and some of the many things to look forward to. Both the grand adventures we’ll embark on in our real lives as well as on the big screen. That’s right!
With no shortage of major and minor releases coming at us over the next 52 weeks of life, film fans will definitely have their hands full this year. So, whether you’re into superhero films, dramas, horror flicks, or comedies, be sure to fill that new calendar of yours with some of the new releases of 2019. Ladies, gentlemen, and other general peeps, welcome for the last time to The Ranting SBox’s Annual Movie Countdown (2017 Edition)… aka the 2017 Movie Countdown. For those who are joining us for the first time, this miniseries serves as an annual tradition on this blog where I gather all the movies I saw the previous year and rank them from worst to best, giving my brief thoughts on each as I go.
This year there were 36 movies up for consideration. (See the full list here). We started our journey through the year of 2017 with the worst and most Mediocre offerings of the year. This was shortly followed by discussing the more middle of the road, Good movies of the year, and then a look at 10 of 2017’s Great films. If you were to ask me how 2016 stacked up to previous years in terms of films, I’d probably define it as “underwhelming”. It was an odd year for big budget movies, where most of the year’s most anticipated films ended up disappointing audiences, as was the case with Batman v Superman, Ghostbusters, Independence Day 2 and Jason Bourne among others. Meanwhile, the best films of the year existed below the surface, often raking in middling returns and going unnoticed — such is the fate of The Nice Guys and Kubo and the Two Strings. I enjoyed a lot of films in 2016 (as you’ll see in the 2016 Movie Countdown), but for what it’s worth, I’m hoping 2017 is a lot better.
