SBox Spoils: Avengers 3: Infinity War (Movie Review)

Note: The following review is a spoiler-filled review. For my spoiler-free thoughts on this movie, please click here. You’ve been warned!

There was an idea… to gather a series of known and unknown comic book characters… to see if they can become something more… so they can make the big bucks… that James Cameron never could.

Welcome one and all to the very first edition of SBox Spoils. This is something I’ve been planning to do for a while, but the concept is very straightforward. In addition to creating the regular, spoiler-free reviews I always have (under the title SBox Recommends), I will also be offering a spoiler-filled review which will be meant for those who have already seen the movie or simply don’t care that much about spoilers. The idea is to give a more unfettered, in-depth perspective on a movie than I could give otherwise.

I’ll talk more about what this segment will entail in terms of the future in a separate post down the road, but for right now consider this first installment as a kind of test-run. A proof of concept if you will.

With introductions out of the way, I believe it’s time to finally talk about the film of the hour. For our first spoiler-filled review, we’re gonna talk about the most anticipated film of the decade bar-none, Avengers: Infinity War. SBox Recommends: Avengers 3 – Infinity War (Movie Review | NO SPOILERS)

Note: SBR never spoils. You are safe. Enjoy! (To see my spoiler-filled thoughts on this film, click here).

There was an idea… to gather a series of known and unknown comic book characters… and see if they can become something more… so they can make the big bucks… that James Cameron never could.

Welcome back to SBox Recommends, where our motto is “every film has its fans”. Here I see a movie, review it, and then find out who will like it most and who will like it least.

On May 2, 2008, the first film in a series soon to be known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe was released in theaters. And from that one film based on a minimally known comic book character, starring an unlikely lead star, at a vision of a no-name producer and a comedy director, it grew into a massive and beloved network of films that both captured audiences’ hearts and changed Hollywood forever. The journey that Disney, Marvel Studios, and Kevin Feige have led us on has brought us to many interesting places in a decade’s time. We’ve seen men learn to fly, conjure spells, and shrink down to the size of insects. We’ve witnessed gods coming down from the sky and soldiers rising up from the ice. And we’ve come to learn that heroes can come from the most unlikely of places, whether it’s a teenage kid, a master assassin, the king of a “third world” nation, a giant green rage monster, or a talking raccoon.

And what has all of this been leading up to? Why, what else but a massive event? Not just a movie. An event. A huge cinematic moment whose goal is to take 10 years of storytelling, character development, and world-building and channel it all into one epic story. Does it succeed? Continue reading SBox Recommends: Avengers 3 – Infinity War (Movie Review | NO SPOILERS)

SBox Soapbox: My Most Anticipated Movies of 2018

Greetings, one and all! Allow me to personally welcome you to the year 2018. Man, if you are anything like me, just saying the words “welcome to 2018” gives you the chills. Then again, it is pretty cold at the moment, even here in South Florida, so who knows? Maybe those chills are more hypothermia than anything else.

Alternatively, if you’re like me, the fact that it’s 2018 is reason enough to be excited out of your mind. Just look at all the big and exciting movies set to come in the next 365 days of life. Whether it’s the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a long-awaited adaptation of your favorite book, a remake of one of your most cherished films, the sequel to one of your favorite movies, or something completely new and original, 2018 appears to have a ton to offer moviegoers over the next 12 months.

Some movies may end up exceeding expectations and other will fall well beneath them, but for now, let’s highlight some of the movies I’m personally the most excited to see this year. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: My Most Anticipated Movies of 2018

SBox Soapbox: Should Disney Reboot the X-Men or Just Leave It Be? (Part 1)

Thursday was quite the eventful day for a variety of reasons. For one, the FCC and Ajit Pai have finally achieved their dream of killing Net Neutrality, completely disregarding consumer well-being for the sake of filling the already full pockets of a handful of individuals. As you can tell, I’m pissed, but we’re not here to talk about that. We’re here to talk about the good things that happened that day, like Disney buying 20th Century Fox for the low, low price of $56 billion.

It’s been the topic on everyone’s mind for the past month, but it’s finally time for me to talk about it. Through Disney’s purchase of most of Fox’s assets, Disney has gone from the top movie studio on the market to… well, the top movie studio on the market by an even bigger margin. This deal has massive reach and a lot of properties are now under the Disney banner, such as Avatar, Planet of the Apes, The Simpsons, X-Files, Predator, and Family Guy. Most of all, Marvel Studios now has access to the final 3 properties outside Disney’s reach: X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. SBox Soapbox: D23 2017 News Round-Up

Over the weekend, Disney fans everywhere were treated to an onslaught of news, trailers, and info as the company held the fifth ever D23 expo. A biennial convention dedicated exclusively for all things Disney, the convention has become a coveted tradition for Disnerds, Pixar-tards, Marvel maniacs, and Star Wars geeks to get the down-low on upcoming Disney movies. And those who attend the convention in Anahiem get to experience much more with exclusive products, panels, events, and even… exclusive footage… Huh, so that’s what jealousy feels like.

Normally I don’t pay much attention to D23, but upon learning about it 2 years ago I decided to actually keep my ear to the ground this time. I’m very glad I did, too, because I left the convention period with so much joy and anticipation that I simply have to share it with you guys! So here are some of the big news updates that stuck out to me and what I thought of them. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: D23 2017 News Round-Up

SBox Soapbox: How Deadpool Can Fit Into the MCU

Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe hosts a great many characters in their movies, from Iron Man to Ant-Man to Spider-Man, not all Marvel characters are created equal. In fact, Marvel Studios has access to all but 3 of their biggest franchises’ film rights: Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool. Still, many fans of the Marvel characters and their films hope for a day when… you know what? Fuck it. This is part 3 of this series and I’ve started them nearly the same way every time. You get the point by now.

For those of you who are joining us for the first time, welcome! I’ve been going through all 3 of the Marvel properties owned by 20th Century FOX and discussing some of the ways Marvel Studios and Disney could go about hypothetically bringing these characters into the MCU. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: How Deadpool Can Fit Into the MCU

SBox Soapbox: How the X-Men Can Fit Into the MCU

While the MCU is massive in terms of characters — Thor, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Black Panther, etc. — most fans know that the series is missing a few key characters. These characters — the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool — have been notably absent from the ever-growing Marvel film playground despite having a great amount of importance in the comics. This unfortunate reality has led many to hope for a day when these FOX-owned properties will be reunited with their friends over at Disney. But where could these characters fit if and when they do come back into the fray?

In this 3 part miniseries, I plan on tackling this question with each of the FOX-owned Marvel franchises, discussing some of the ways Marvel Studios could merge these characters into the MCU. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: How the X-Men Can Fit Into the MCU

SBox Soapbox: How the Fantastic Four Can Fit in the MCU

Despite the Marvel Cinematic Universe hosting a massive line of characters — such as the Avengers, Defenders, Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — there’s still a sense that the MCU is somewhat incomplete. It’s hard not to think that way when you compare the Marvel comics to what’s actually playing in theaters and notice the absence of 3 big franchises from the Avengers-canon: Fantastic Four, Deadpool, and X-Men. These 3 franchises make up the FOX/Marvel stable, the only characters Marvel and Disney lack access to in terms of film and television, much to the dismay of most fans who want to see the characters finally reunited on the big screen. SBox Quickie: Marvel’s Kingdom Hearts Chances May Have Risen

maxresdefault2

Yesterday I was completely blind sighted by the teaser for The Avengers Project. It’s been less than 48 hours since I saw the less than one minute trailer, and yet my mind is still racing in regards of what this game will be. It’s funny what the mind can do with so little information isn’t it, but Square-Enix’s name alone is enough to make me hyped. After all, any opportunity to literally be an Avenger is one I’ll gladly take.

Currently there’s not a lot of information for me to cover or interpret. Perhaps at a future date I’ll make an Analysis of the trailer or something like that, but right now all I can do is make somewhat wild guesses as to what it’ll be. Though you know what Square-Enix game I can talk a bit about? Kingdom Hears III. Continue reading SBox Quickie: Marvel’s Kingdom Hearts Chances May Have Risen
