2017 Movie Countdown: The Great (#20-#11)

Welcome back, all ye peeps, to the third installment of the 2017 Movie Countdown (or, if you prefer the longer title, The Ranting SBox’s Annual Movie Countdown [2017 Edition]). For those of you just joining us, this is Part 3 of a 4 part miniseries where I gather all the 36 movies I saw in the year 2017 and rank them from worst to best, discussing each as I go. This has been a tradition of mine for the past 4 years, and may I’m having a blast making these posts so far. These are always some of the my favorite posts of every year, so I hope you’re enjoying these as much as I am making them.

Anyway, to see the full list of movies I’ll be covering throughout the countdown, click here for the series’ intro post. There you’ll also find links to the previous installments of the countdown, but you can also find those links for Part 1 and Part 2 right here.

Last time we went up a notch from some of the year’s weakest offerings to the more middle of the road films. Now we take things up another notch higher with the “Great” category. Continue reading 2017 Movie Countdown: The Great (#20-#11)

2017 Movie Countdown: The Good (#27-21)

Welcome back to The Ranting SBox’s Annual Movie Countdown (2017 Edition)… or as I like to all it, the 2017 Movie Countdown. For those who are joining us for the first time, this is Part 2 in a 4 part mini-series here at The Ranting SBox blog, where I go through all the 36 movies I saw in the year 2017 and rank them from worst to best. To see the full list of movies I’ll be covering during the countdown, click here. While you’re at it, feel free to catch up on the countdown by checking out the previous installment here.

Last time, we went through some of the year’s less savory offerings as well as some movies I was personally disappointed by. This time it’s time to kick it up a notch with this category simply called “The Good”. The following 7 movies are ones that, while far from excellent, I had a good time watching. What separates a movie in the “Good” category from something in the “Mediocre” one is the element of recidivism. Would I watch this movie again willingly? If the answer to that question is yes, then those films are included here and beyond. Continue reading 2017 Movie Countdown: The Good (#27-21)

2017 Movie Countdown: The Mediocre (#36-28)

Welcome, one and all, to the first installment of The Ranting SBox’s Annual Movie Countdown (2017 Edition)… also simply known as the 2017 Movie Countdown. For the fourth year in a row, it is my duty and honor to present you guys the 36 movies I saw throughout 2017 ranked from worst to best. If you’d like more information on the mini-series in question or if you’d like to see the full list of movies I’ll be covering in this countdown, click here for the Intro post and join me back here every Sunday from now until February 4 to see how the list continues.

Now, today is not a Sunday, but because I started the countdown late this year I decided to get the first of these 4 posts out as soon as possible. And as you may guess, this post starts with my least favorite films of the year. Thankfully, I only flat-out hated one movie from last year, which means instead of starting with the traditional “Bottom of the Barrel” category, we’re moving right into the next step up: “The Mediocre”. SBox Soapbox: My Uneducated Oscar Predictions 2017

oscars-2017

This weekend marks probably the most important dates on the movie buff calendar: The Academy Awards. We’ve been talking about it for months now, but the day has finally come for us to see which films, actors, directors, and musicians will receive the highest honor in Hollywood (you know, other than money). By now, many should have your bets placed and your predictions set as Sunday night draws closer and closer. Some may be wondering my own predictions for the awards, and boy do I have them…They may not be well founded predictions in the world, but they’re predictions nonetheless. Intro to 2016 Movie Countdown

I’d like to welcome one and all to the year 2017 and to The Ranting SBox’s 2016 Movie Countdown. This is my third annual countdown event where I take every film I saw in the previous year and rank them from worst to best. Instead of making one simple post with a Top 10 or 5 of the year, I that with all the films I see in a given year I’d just cover all of them in mini-review format. SBox Soapbox: My Most Anticipated Movies of 2017

If you were to ask me how 2016 stacked up to previous years in terms of films, I’d probably define it as “underwhelming”. It was an odd year for big budget movies, where most of the year’s most anticipated films ended up disappointing audiences, as was the case with Batman v Superman, Ghostbusters, Independence Day 2 and Jason Bourne among others. Meanwhile, the best films of the year existed below the surface, often raking in middling returns and going unnoticed — such is the fate of The Nice Guys and Kubo and the Two Strings. I enjoyed a lot of films in 2016 (as you’ll see in the 2016 Movie Countdown), but for what it’s worth, I’m hoping 2017 is a lot better.

As is tradition here on The Ranting SBox, I start every year with a list of my most anticipated films of the new year. Continue reading SBox Soapbox: My Most Anticipated Movies of 2017

Mini-Update (12/31/16): Happy New Year from The Ranting SBox!

Greetings peeps!

As you may have guessed, this will be my final blog post of the year. As I write this we are less than 3 hours away from 2017 on the East Coast. I promised you guys to get at least one more blog post before the new year. I decided to hold off on that post so that I have more content for you guys in 2017. Until then, I wanted to take a little time to say thank you.

The world may have been a scary and hectic place in 2016, but at least the same can’t be said for this blog. In 2016, I was able to post 93 times (including this post), all of which were viewed 1,299 times by 706 different people across 60 countries around the world and liked 165 times. This year was also significant for marking over two years since I’ve started this blog and that I have finally reached the milestone of 100 WordPress followers. Most of all I had a ton of fun doing, and I can’t thank you guys enough for supporting my little slice of the Internet. I may do this mostly for fun, but it’s always touching to know that someone out there is listening to what I have to say. You guys make this whole adventure worth it.

I plan on making 2017 a bigger and better year for the blog. I have a ton of ideas for new posts as well as things I’ve been promising for a while all coming in the next 365 days on this blog. January in particular will have a ton of posts coming you guys’ way. And for those who’ve been with me for a while, don’t worry. I have plans on covering much more than just the movie countdown… That’s right, keep your ear to the ground this coming week, because the 2016 Movie Countdown is coming your way. More on that in a couple days.

For now, I hope you guys are enjoying your New Years Eve and will have a ton of awesome luck in 2017. Thank you guys for making this otherwise screwed up year worth stomaching. I know 2016 was a tough year to get through, but as we say goodbye to this crazy year, I have a song to go with this evening. A song that I heard the other day I thought was the perfect way to usher in the New Year. If 2016 was a tough year for you, I hope this song by Eminem and Sia touches you. It’s a song about not worrying about what happened yesterday, because today’s a new day. More than that, today is going to be gone tomorrow.

I’m SBox180. Thanks for reading, and Happy New Year Year!
