Intro to 2017 Movie Countdown

Greetings one and all, and welcome to yet another year of life on this beautiful planet of ours. What makes this planet so beautiful you may ask? Well, just take a look at all the exciting things that happened last year. There was a guy who turned into a multiple-personality disordered super villain back in January. In February, two teachers got into a fist fight. Giant alien robots were fighting over the summer, and a guy in red and blue spandex teamed up with another guy in a flying metal suit. Some kids fought off a killer clown back in September, and then in December the greatest show ever was put on.

Every year is exciting when you’re a movie fan.

Yes, we here at The Ranting SBox love our movies, which is why I am so happy to kick off 2018 with one of the blog’s longest lasting traditions: the annual movie countdown. For those unfamiliar, every year in January I like to look back at all the movies I saw the previous year (in this case 2017) and cover them from worst to best throughout the months of January and February. It’s one of my favorite things to do on the blog, and despite these countdowns always proving to be a huger endeavor than I realize, I can’t help but look forward to it every year.Historically speaking, the annual countdown has been very difficult to maintain, which has led to two of the three previous countdowns being cut short. To save you the very long story, I’ve always tried to do one post per movie each day; something very hard to do when you are a college student with other obligations. So, last year I came up with a new format to ease the amount of labor and time it would take to complete the countdown. It seemed to work pretty well last year, which is why I decided to implement it here. This time, however, I plan on doing it right.

Basically, the 2017 Movie Countdown will consist of 4 posts published every week, covering multiple movies in each post in order of worst to best. I will rundown each movie with a one or two paragraph summary of what I thought of each film. The installments will come out in the following order:

I have decided to take out the Bottom of the Barrel category from last year due to there being only one movie from last year that I downright hated. (Can’t wait to talk about that again). Fortunately, I seemed to have missed most the stinkers of 2017, which means this year will probably be a very positive experience for all of us.

Before getting into which movies will be featured in the countdown, I want to point out that I have excluded 1 movie from this year’s list, The Inhumans IMAX Experience. Despite the fact that I did go to the theater to see this and it would be fun to talk about, it’s technically a long TV pilot and not a movie, making it unfair to compare it to any other movie. So, just know that it would’ve made the mid-Mediocre category. With that said, here are the 36 movies I will be covering during the 2017 Movie Countdown. (Note: these films are ordered by release date, not quality):

  • Split
  • A Dog’s Purpose
  • The LEGO Batman Movie
  • John Wick: Chapter 2
  • Fist Fight
  • Get Out
  • Logan
